#cuthate is an event for compassionate stylists giving their services to donate proceeds to important organizations such as planned parenthood, NNIRR, ACLU, and the trevor project. guests are able to donate to fight against racism, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia, intolerance, and transphobia. as the event grows and expands to more salons, more organizations can be added to the list.
i decided to put this event together out of feeling helpless in wanting to help my fellow humans and not really knowing how to, and knowing that a lot of other people feel similar in not knowing where to start. it's nice to get a haircut but it's nicer to know your money is doing something for good and to be surrounded by likeminded people who also want to give back.
- the ACLU is the american civil liberties union which was founded in 1920 and is our nation's guardians of liberty for all. the ACLU works in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve individual rights and liberties to all people in the United States by the constitution and laws in this country.
- the NNIRR is the national network for immigrant and refugee rights, and they work to defend and expand the rights of all immigrants and refugees, regardless of their immigration status. it was founded in 1986 and has membership from all sorts of diverse immigrant communities, and actively builds alliances with social and economic justice partners around the US.
- planned parenthood provides trusted community health care, informs and educates the community, leads reproductive health and rights, and helps advance global health. they provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to nearly five million women, men, and adolescents every year. planned parenthood provides not only birth control, but pap smears, breast exams, and HIV/AIDS and STD/STI testing and care. only about 3% of their services are abortion services.
- the trevor project provides crisis counseling to young LGTBQ people thinking of suicide, offer resources, supportive counseling, and a sense of community to LGBTQ young people to reduce the risk that they become suicidal, educate young people and adults who interact with young people on LGBTQ-competent suicide prevention, risk detection / response, and also advocate laws and policies that reduce the risk of suicide in young LGBTQ youth.
all of these organizations are vital to our communities and help in so many ways. obviously getting your hair cut is nice and it's fun to be a part of this cut hate movement, but i strongly urge anyone to directly donate to any of these donations on their own as well.
if you have any questions or would like your salon to be a part of this movement, please contact me through email at firstname.lastname@example.org
